    To take advantage of JIRA email features, we need to upgrade our
    installation. I've heard of a few not-so-smooth JIRA upgrades, so I am
    not too eager to jump on it.

    I agree with the prediction. The first wave of such one-stop
    environments (SourceForge) was too lame and user unfriendly. The second
    wave should be coming. And not only for open source - any of this
    applies 100% to any collaborative project.
