Here is an overview of the issue:
    ---------------------------------------------------------------------
            Key: CAY-446
Summary: Commit operation should respect existing thread-bound transactions
           Type: Improvement

         Status: Assigned
       Priority: Major

        Project: Cayenne
     Components:
                 Cayenne Core Library
       Fix Fors:
                 1.2 [DEV]
       Versions:
                 1.2 [DEV]

       Assignee: Andrus Adamchik
       Reporter: Andrus Adamchik

        Created: Tue, 14 Feb 2006 11:09 PM
        Updated: Tue, 14 Feb 2006 11:09 PM

    Description:
Now that we are binding transactions to threads, Cayenne shouldn't ever attempt to start a new transaction if one already exists in the current thread.

One remaining place where I found an inconsistency with this approach is in DataDomain.onSync(..). Also if a user transaction exists, Cayenne shouldn't attempt to commit it, leaving it up to the transaction creator.
