Ok, this seems to work just fine.
I've created a replacement org.eclipse.ant.core that includes the patched
AntCorePlugin.java and the version of my Eclipse M5 here. I've been using
Eclipse without hangs/crashes up to now which makes me more and more confident.
Just in case anyone wants to save him/hersef the hassle of checking out
eclipse and building the plugin, my repaired version is available from
http://xanthippe.dyndns.org/external/org.eclipse.ant.core_2.1.0.zip
This is about 48k, built on Windows 2000, Eclipse M5, JDK 1.3.1_02
Life is a bit easier now,
-dirk :-)
