The clue was that this exact same error message came up for someone
in the WebObjects Lab at WWDC and a local hero happened by and said
"are you running in 1.5?" which turned out to be the answer. So I
totally cheated on this one. The error message is completely obtuse
and has effectively NO clue that this is the problem. I suspect if
you dug more into log files that it would be more obvious.
