Say one Thing, do Another
One of my favourite audience anecdotes comes from Steve Mulder, author
of The User is Always Right. In one of his webinars, Mulder told a
story about an electronic company who were about to launch a new
product and invested a lot of time in research as part of the process,
including focus groups.
The company had narrowed the colours for this boom box down to yellow
or black. The focus groups agreed that they should choose the colour
yellow for the product.
Participants said, “Yes, the boom box should definitely be yellow.
It’s vibrant and energetic!” When the focus groups were done, each
person was rewarded with a boom box. On the way out they could choose
a yellow or black boom box. They all chose black.
