Yes, you are right. I was thinking of it from the perspective of  
creating the Map in the application which passes the parameters to  
Cayenne.
I also found this in Expression:
      *..aram parameters a map of parameters, with each key being a  
string name of an
      *            expression parameter, and value being the value  
that should be used in
      *            the final expression.
and a fair amount of code which seems to assume the key is a String  
and the value any type of Object.
