See Mike's note in the same thread. It applies to integration with
third party tools too. My own vision of the Modeler is to ensure it
works as a standalone application (with its own plugin support).
If I am personally to start work on plugins for other tools, I'd start
with Eclipse first. But contributions are definitely welcomed.
